Individual Therapy

Individual Therapy is offered to children, adolescents, and adults who may be experiencing difficulties in their daily lives. Family Preservation Services provides an environment that is trauma-informed and safe for individuals to address the emotions, feelings, beliefs, and/or functioning that may be impaired due to the challenges experienced within one’s personal life. This process includes the identification of challenging issues, setting of personal goals, developing an understanding of “self”, and working toward positive change.

Art therapy involves the use of creative techniques such as drawing, painting, collage, coloring, or sculpting to help people express themselves artistically and examine the psychological and emotional undertones in their art. With the guidance of a credentialed art therapist, clients can “decode” the nonverbal messages, symbols, and metaphors often found in these art forms, which should lead to a better understanding of their feelings and behavior so they can move on to resolve deeper issues.

Art therapy helps children, adolescents, and adults explore their emotions, improve self-esteem, manage addictions, relieve stress, improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, and cope with a physical illness or disability. No artistic ability is needed for art therapy to be successful, because the therapeutic process is not about the artistic value of the work, but rather about finding associations between the creative choices made and a client’s inner life. The artwork can be used as a springboard for reawakening memories and telling stories that may reveal messages and beliefs from the unconscious mind.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a structured, short-term treatment model that is evidence-based and known to effectively improve a range of trauma-related outcomes such as affective, cognitive, and behavioral problems and symptoms associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Motivational Interviewing uses collaborative conversation for strengthening a person’s motivation and commitment to making change. It is a person-centered to therapy that addresses the common problem of ambivalence about change by focusing attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen an individual’s motivation for, and movement towards a specific goal by stimulating and exploring one’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.
Seeking Safety is a therapeutic present-focused process. Seeking Safety is often used in the early stages of treatment with individuals who have experienced significant trauma. This is an evidence-based practice that is beneficial in increasing ones feelings of safety, teaching coping skills, and building resilience.

Psychosexual Evaluation

Psychosexual Evaluations are conducted by Certified Sex Offender Treatment Professionals (CSOTP) with a focus on one’s sexual history, including the exploration of sexual development, attitudes, fantasies, and adjustment.

To enhance the reliability, comprehensiveness, and usefulness of the psychosexual evaluations, all available sources of information are reviewed and integrated into the process. Important sources of information may include police reports, victim statements, prior treatment records, school records, court interviews with the individual, and interviews with others. Parents are also interviewed when a juvenile is the subject of the evaluation.

Psychosexual Assessments are designed to determine:

  • The risk of recidivism
  • Interventions that will be most effective
  • Specific risk factors
  • One’s willingness to comply with treatment recommendations and interventions
  • Identifying factors that may prevent engagement in treatment and interventions
  • Identifying strengths and protective factors that are preventatives

Family Therapy

Family Therapy offers opportunities to work toward the resolution of issues that challenge the harmony and functioning of couples or the family as a unit. Family Preservation Services recognizes the importance of the emphasis on family relationships and the impact they have on psychological health. Our families are coached and encouraged to work together as a unit by identifying goals and working to nurture change and develop the family system by improving communication, understanding, conflict resolution, and overall cohesiveness.

Group Therapy

Group Therapy is an opportunity for multiple individuals with the same or very similar issues to come together, with facilitation of a trained clinician, in an effort to discuss challenges, gain mutual support from peers, and work toward resolving the identified issues. Group Therapy may consist of psycho-education, psychotherapy, skills development or support groups.

Trauma Evaluation

Trauma Evaluations utilize a multi-systemic approach to assess current individual functioning. The key features of the Trauma Evaluation that make this assessment unique include:

  • Acknowledging the individual as a survivor, with the need to be respected, informed, connected and hopeful regarding their own recovery.
  • Recognizing, up front, the interrelation between trauma and symptoms of trauma (depression, anger, physical aggression, substance abuse, challenging relationships with others, etc.).
  • The need to work in a collaborative way with survivors, family, friends and other human service agencies in a manner that empowers the individual.
  • Conducted in the natural environment of the individual.
  • Trauma informed recommendations for treatment.
