Treatment Foster Care

Treatment Foster Care

Why Treatment Foster Care (TFC)?

Treatment Foster Care (TFC) is an intensive, treatment-based approach to meeting the physical and emotional needs of children who have been removed from their home. Family Preservation Services receive referrals for children in need of a treatment-level of care that can be successful in a supportive, well-trained, family environment. Our services focus on permanency, safety and wellbeing for both the child and parents, providing a therapeutic level of care that addresses trauma healing, parental skill building, success in school and coping skills. Our goal is to ensure each child’s physical and emotional safety and facilitate the return to their family or another permanency option.

Who is referred for Treatment Foster Care?

The children referred to Family Preservation Services for Treatment Foster Care services are generally in the custody of the Commonwealth of Virginia for a variety of reasons:

–  Many of our children have goals of returning home to their biological families once the conditions are right

– Some of our children are stepping down from a more intensive residential treatment facility to a structured family environment

– Many are teens who have goals of independence, meaning they need a stable home until they are ready to move into adulthood.

– Some children have goals of adoption and need that special someone or special family that is willing to provide permanency for them.

What is the process for a child entering Treatment Foster Care?

Family Preservation Services looks at the needs of each particular child in Virginia referred to us by the Department of Social Services or Department of Human Services and matches them with a licensed foster home based on the strengths, experiences, and preferences of the foster families.  Information is shared with the foster parent(s) about the prospective foster child and, when possible, pre-placement visits are arranged for the foster parent/family to meet with the child.
